Defending champion De La Salle University swampedUniversity of the East, 25-12, 25-18, 25-20, on Wednesday to sweep the first round of UAAP women’s volleyball at The Arena in San Juan City.
La Salle won all its seven first-round games. National University had a 6-1 win-loss slate, and last year’s runner-up Ateneo de Manila University. 5-2.
UE contrast, has a 0-7 card.
Reigning co-Most Valuable Player Ara Galang powered the Lady Archers with 13 points on 11 attacks and a couple of aces. Rookie Desiree Cheng contributed eight, and Abigail Marano, six.
The Lady Warriors got a combined 19 points from skipper Sarina Bulan and rookie Shaya Adorador.
La Salle earned extra 25 points on UE’s errors. It also scored eight aces and six blocks and had 26 excellent sets compared to UE’s eight.
In the men’s division, Ateneo stunned former titlist University of Santo Tomas, 25-19, 20-25, 25-18, 25-15. Marck Jesus Espejo led te Blue Eagles with 21 points while Neil Patrick Flores and Rex Intal added 10 apiece.
Adamson University needed an extra set to beat La Salle, 25-19, 25-18, 23-25, 25-23. Michael Sudaria had 19 points for the Soaring Falcons.
