Former titlist University of Santo Tomas downed University of the Philippines, 25-15 22-25, 25-21 25-22, to post its first win in UAAP women’s volleyball on Wednesday at The Arena in San Juan City.
Sophomore Jem Nicole Gutierrez nailed 20 points highlighted by 17 attacks, Carmela Tunay chipped in 17 points and Pamela Lastimosa contributed 12 for the Tigresses.
“We didn’t communicate in the second set but we were able to get back on track in the third and fourth sets to get this win,” said Gutierrez.
UST joined defending champion De La Salle University and title contender National University on top of the standings with 1-0.
UP dropped to 0-1, the same card as Ateneo de Manila University and Adamson University.
In the men’s division, UP stunned former champion UST, 25-23-22-25, 25-17, 25-23, to join opening day winners.
Julius Evan Raymundo scored 17 points including eight blocks while Wendell Miguel added 16 points for the Fighting Maroons. The Growling Tigers got 20 points each from Gil Alfafara and Romnick Rico.
Ateneo de Manila University also had a good start by nipping University of the East, 25-, 25-19, 25-14.
Ricci Gonzales led the Blue Eagles with 17 points while Joshua Villanueva and Marck Espejo scored 10 points each.
