Udtohan, Illustre, Ybañez top medal count in Palaro

STA. Cruz, Laguna: Sprinter Jomar Udtohan of San Sebastian College-Manila, archer Mary Queen Ybañez of La Union and swimmer Maurice Sacho Illustre emerged as the most bemedaled athletes in the 57th Palarong Pambansa that ended on Saturday at the Laguna Sports Complex in Barangay Bubukal here.

The 17-year-old Bulacan-native Udtohan, representing National Capital Region (NCR), ended his last Palaro campaign with record-breaking wins in the 4×100-m relay (43.1-seconds) and 4×400-m relay (3:22.1-secs). He garnered five gold medals and established five new records in athletics. He also broke the record in the boys’ 400-m dash (49.4 seconds), 100 meters dash (10.8 seconds) and 200 meters dash (21.8 seconds).

Illustre, also 17 year-old, pocketed seven gold medals in swimming including two in relay events. He won the gold in the secondary 400 meters freestyle (4:19.47), 200 meters butterfly (2:10.07), 400 meters medley relay, 800 meters freestyle (8:59.30), 100 meters butterfly (1:03.13), 200 meters freestyle (2:00.30) and 400 meters freestyle.

Ybañez, 16, a graduate of the Lorma College Special Science High School in San Juan, La Union, garnered a total of six golds, one silver and one bronze in secondary division archery, earning her The Most Outstanding Female Athlete plum, edging swimmer Imee Joyce Saavedra of NCR, who finished with four golds and posted two new records in the elementary level.

Ybañez won the 30 meters, 40 meters, 50 meters, 60 meters, single fita round and individual Olympic round. She finished second in the mixed boys and girls event and third in the Olympic team event.

Twenty new records were established in the 57th edition of Palaro, 11 in swimming and nine in athletics. As expected, NCR bagged its 11th straight overall title with a total 106 golds, 63 silvers and 56.

Calabarzon finished second (36-50- 51) followed by Western Visayas (32-33-37), Cordillera Administrative Region (24-11-12, Central Visayas (23-27-39), Northern Mindanao (21-21-31), Soccsksargen (15-17-30), Davao Region (10-20-21), Bicol Region (9-6-22), Central Luzon (8-10-22), Ilocos Region (8-9-14), Caraga (5-8-9), Cagayan Valley (4-12-11), Eastern Visayas (4-8-8), Mimaropa (4-5-11), ARMM (1-1-4) and Zamboanga Peninsula (0-5-9).
