UE drubs UP in FilOil tilt


Group B second seed University of the East (UE) Red Warriors beat the University of the Philippines (UP) Fighting Maroons, 70-67, in the FilOil Flying V pre-season collegiate basketball tournament at the San Juan Arena on Wednesday.

The Red Warriors initiated a strong charge in the first two quarters, establishing a 36-32 lead over the Fighting Maroons at halftime.

UP relied on Paul Desiderio, who grabbed 16 points, to spark a counterattack but was unable to snag a break to turn the game around.

UE’s Chris Javier tallied 12 points and 12 rebounds in their win against fellow UAAP squad UP while Paul Varilla led the Red Warriors with 17 points.

Meanwhile, Bright Akhuetie powered the University of Perpetual Help System Dalta (UPHSD) Altas’ 81-78 victory against the College of Saint Benilde (CSB) Blazers.

Despite posting a 27-18 lead after the first ten minutes of their meeting, Blazer’s offense went into a slump, allowing Altas’ scorers to take the floor.

The Nigerian center ended another impressive game with a double-double performance, 35 points and 20 rebounds.

JR Ongtengco notched 15 points and 10 rebounds in CSB’s loss to the powerhouse NCAA team.

Meanwhile, the University of Santo Tomas (UST) defeated the Southwestern University (SWU) Cobras, 66-59.

Veteran Ed Daquioag displayed his prowess as they rout the Cebu-based squad, finishing with 22 points, seven rebounds and six assists.

SWU came close to UST by as much as four points after the third, 49-45, but was unable to capitalize on the offensive charge led by Daryl Goloran, who finished with 16 points and 12 rebounds.
