Prolific point guard Roi Sumang copped his first Accel-3XVI Press Corps Player of the Week award after steering the University of the East (UE) to a nerve-wracking win in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines Season 76 men’s basketball tournament.
Sumang made the game winning layup when UE posted a thrilling 68-67 win over last year’s runner-up University of Santo Tomas (UST). He posted a total output of 20 points and had 10 assists.
“Sabi ni coach kung sino raw ang may pinakamalaking puso. So ako na naman, kinuha ko na naman ulit,” said the 5-foot-7 Sumang.
The Growling Tigers were leading, 67-66, with 11 seconds left before Sumang hit a driving layup against a couple of UST defenders including the towering Cameroonian center Karim Abdul.
“It’s not just only the heart but also the head. So H and H. Head and heart. He had those factors in that game,” said UE head coach Boycie Zamar.
UE currently holds the third spot with a 5-3 mark behind Far Eastern University (7-2) and National University (6-3). De La Salle University is in fourth (5-4) followed by UST (4-4), defending champion Ateneo de Manila University (4-4), Adamson University 3-6) and University of the Philippines (0-8).
Sumang took the weekly citation against fellow top performers Cameroonian Emmanuel Mbe of NU, Ateneo’s Kiefer Ravena, and La Salle’s Jason Perkins and Almond Vosotros.
