Homegrown Filipino fighter Dave “The Scarecrow” Galera will see action in the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Fight Night 34 on January 3, 2014, at the Marina Bay sands in Singapore.

The “Father of Philippine Mixed Martial Arts (MMA)” and Universal Reality Combat Championship (URCC) founder Alvin Aguilar told The Manila Times that the UFC indeed signed Galera, which is currently the URCC bantamweight champion. Aguilar said that he is particularly impressed by Galera’s defensive and ground skills.

“The URCC’s dream is to showcase our talent to the world and that’s only the first fighter [Galera]. There are still more upcoming Filipino fighters who will be signed up,” said Aguilar, the country’s first certified Brazilian jiu-jitsu (BJJ) black belt.

The 5’11 Galera, who trains with Team Lakay in Baguio City, is an adept in BJJ but is also a formidable stand-up fighter. He started his MMA career in 2011 winning all his fights by technical knockout or by submission including three in the URCC.

Galera will meet Singaporean fighter Royston Wee with 2-0 win-loss slate. Wee is the first Singaporean fighter to fight in the UFC.
