The Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), the largest mixed martial arts (MMA) promotion company in the world will hold an action packed Philippine edition on May 16 at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.
“We are thrilled to be kicking off our Asia series in Manila this year. The UFC has a loyal and passionate fan base in the Philippines and we’re looking forward to bringing the very best of mixed martial arts to Manila for the first time,” said UFC Vice-President and General Manager Kenneth Berger during a press conference at Coral Way lobby on Thursday.
Kerger said that they are yet to announce the names of the fighters joining the event, “There is no formal list of fight card or the main event just yet because the match makers will decide to it, but we guarantee to bring the best foreign and local fighters around. We are expecting a huge capacity crowd to watch the fight. We will announce the official fight card soon.”
He also said that there is a possibility for middleweight Filipino-American Mark Muñoz (13-5 win-loss card) to fight in the Philippine edition of the UFC depending on the result of his fight against Roan Carneiro on February 28 at the Staples Center in Los Angeles California.
“There is a possibility he can suit up but it depends upon the result of his fight next month,” Kerger said.
The Philippines has been visited by several UFC superstars in recent years among them Chuck Liddell, Georges St-Pierre, BJ Penn, Quinton “Rampage” Jackson, Alexander Gustafsson, Cung Le, Urijah Faber and Carlos Condit.
Hans Sy of SM Group of Companies told The Manila Times that he really wanted to see light heavyweight Jon Jones fight in May.
“That’s my wish list to UFC. I really like to see Jon Jones fight but it is really up to them. I’m very pleased that they will host a fight here in Manila. Filipinos really love the MMA and the UFC,” said Sy.
Two Filipino fighters—Mark Eddiva and Roldan Sangcha-an— who have live contracts with UFC might fight in May.
