THE British Embassy in Manila has warned Filipino travelers regarding the ban of khat plant in the United Kingdom. In a letter sent to Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA) assistant general manager for security and emergency services Vicente Guerzon, British Embassy’s Second Secretary Colin Glen said that “Her Majesty’s government has decided to make the khat plant illegal to produce, possess, supply, import and export under the United Kingdom’s Misuse of Drugs Act of 1971.” Khat (Catha edulis) is a leafy stimulant grown in East Africa and Yemen that gives a mild ecstasy or amphetamine-like high for as long as a person chews it. Glen said the plant contains cathinone and cathine, which have stimulant properties and are drugs subject to international control.
