There was a time when super cars packing 1,000 horsepower were a rarity, or a one-in-a-million thing. But that is slowly changing with respected builders of high-performance and racing cars showing the motoring world that attaining 1,000 hp underneath the hood is not a monopoly of a few established car giants.
Enter the Ultima Evolution, of which the top-of-the-line model boasts of a mind-blowing 1,020 bhp and 920 foot-pounds of torque from a Chevrolet LS 6.8-liter V8 supercharged engine that has a twin front-mounted Ultima charge cooler system, and twin air filters.
Its manufacturer, Ultima Sports Ltd. based in the United Kingdom, said the Ultima Evolution will be available in coupe and convertible form. The company said over 15 different power level options ranging from 350-bhp for the base model, to 1,020-bhp for the top-of-the-range model.
Ultima Sports said its Evolution uses the Le Mans Group C body configuration, and qualifies to be called a super car.
“The Ultima Evolution retains the same timeless Le Mans Group C inspired body shape as the Ultima GTR and Ultima Can-Am, but is a vastly improved and modernized super car in every sense. The superior Evolution model takes the Ultima to even greater levels of fit, finish, quality, safety, driver comfort, usability, practicality, handling finesse and performance,” the company said in its website.
The new 1020-bhp Evolution model has been tested by Ultima’s factory and recorded a road legal 0-60 miles per hour (96 kilometers per hour) time of 2.3 seconds, 0-100 mph (160 kph) of 4.9 seconds with 0-150 mph (240 kph) taking only 8.9 seconds. The company claims the Ultima Evolution can accelerate toward 240 mph (384 kph).
The 1020-bhp Evolution’s performance in the quarter-mile run was clocked at 9.2 seconds at 156 mph (249.6 kph).
“The 1020-bhp Evolution model will surpass the performance envelope of the famous Ultima GTR720 [which is the]current 0-100 mph-0 world record holder, which blasted around the top gear test track in full road going configuration in just 1 minute [and]12.8second with full video and GPS verified documentation,” Ultima Sports said.
The Ultima Evolution powered by the 6.2-liter V-8 480-bhp engine package is also no slouch, because it has a 0-60 mph (0-100 96 kph) time of 3.1 seconds, 0-100 mph (0-160 kph) time of 6.4 seconds and a top speed of 180 mph (288 kph). Its quarter-mile performance was clocked at 11.4 seconds at 129 mph (206.4 kph).
The company said the Ultima Evolution is a product of its continuous research and development over the past 15 years since the introduction of the Ultima GTR and Can-Am, which are both world record holders. The company said customer feedback was also used in coming up with the Ultima Evolution. Production of the GTR and Can-Am has been discontinued.
“There is virtually no part of the Ultima Evolution that is in the same specification as when the GTR and Can-Am were first launched, with fundamental changes and enhancements having taken place to the chassis, bodywork, drivetrain, wheels, cooling system, fuel system, steering system, suspension, lighting, interior and all key parameters on the Ultima,” it added.
Features and Accessories
The Evolution has a length of 4,000 mm, width of 1,850 mm and a height of 1,070 mm. It has a wheelbase of 2,560 mm and a ground clearance of 120 mm that is adjustable. Weighing only 950 kilograms, the Evolution is one of the lightest super cars today.
The Ultima Evolution’s chassis is a fully-updated spaceframe using mainly 38 millimeter x 1.5mm diameter tubing to give the super car market-leading torsional rigidity. Its body is unpainted Glass Reinforced Plastic finished in immaculate gel coat finish that utilizes the latest advances in pigment technology.
The super car has full LED lighting at the front and rear, with a carbon fiber style headlight cluster arrangement and machined aluminium anodized bezels. A rear view camera and parking sensors are optional equipment.
Inside the Ultima Evolution are seats and dashboard made from alcantara leather. There is carpet on the floor while a leather-trimmed rollcage is an option. Airconditioning and Alpine in car entertainment system with satellite navigation option are also offered for the Ultima Evolution.
Among the other features of the Ultima Evolution are: stainless steel handbrake lever; Ultima Evolution-branded luggage bag set; and steering wheel mounted wireless switch gear.
Although the top-of-the-line Ultima Evolution has an engine packing 1,020 bhp, its price is quite a steal at about $153,600.
On the production of the Ultima Evolution, the company said in its website “The first customer Ultima Evolution cars will not be delivered until the 1st September 2015 onwards.”
Ultima Sports, however, admits deliveries of its Ultima have been made to existing clients of the brand. Meanwhile, those who will order their Evolution will have to wait for 24 weeks for their super car to be completed. A 24-week wait for a super car, however, is still worth it especially if it has more than 1,000 horses underneath its hood.
