NEW YORK: In a statement released late Thursday (Friday in Manila), United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon welcomed Pope Francis’ encyclical on climate change, saying that it “highlights that climate change is one of the principal challenges facing humanity, and that it is a moral issue requiring respectful dialogue with all parts of society.”

The statement went on to say “… that humanity has a significant obligation to care for and protect our common home, the planet Earth, and to show solidarity with the poorest and most vulnerable members of society who are suffering most from climate impacts.” Ban urged nations to “place the common global good above national interests” in climate talks to be held in Paris later this year.
