A STALWART of the opposition United Nationalist Alliance (UNA) criticized Justice Secretary Leila de Lima for being too involved in the case of Makati City Mayor Jejomar Erwin “Junjun” Binay who was recently suspended by the Office of the Ombudsman in connection with the alleged irregularities in the construction of the Makati Science High School.
“She’s showing too much interest in the case. I think she’s over her mandate . . . she’s going overboard,” JV Bautista, UNA interim secretary-general, said in an interview over the weekend.
Bautista said the Justice department should no longer intrude into the case because it is already with the Ombudsman.
“De Lima is singing the same tune as [Interior Secretary Mar] Roxas. For her to say that Mayor Binay is not the king of Makati, what is her business?” he asked.
“For Roxas to become overacting [to press Binay to vacate his office], that’s understandable because he is the presumptive candidate for president of the Liberal Party. Therefore, he will do everything, of course, to give Binay a hard time into projecting himself as somebody who observes and respect the Rule of Law,” the lawyer added.
Instead of running after the Binays, Bautista said the Justice department should help resolve other big cases like the Maguindanao massacre, address alleged irregularities inside National Bilibid Prison, and file charges against the third batch of lawmakers involved in the pork barrel scam.
“De Lima has absolutely no role there. She’s not doing her job well,” he said.
