Suspended Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia of Cebu of the United Nationalist Alliance (UNA), who won a Congressional seat in the May polls, will support Speaker Feliciano Belmonte, Jr. for the Speakership post, an LP member said Tuesday.
Rep. Ben Evardone of Eastern Samar, who served as one of the spokespersons of the administration’s Team PNoy Senatorial slate, noted that Speaker Belmonte made the disclosure over lunch with President Benigno Aquino 3rd in Malacañang on Monday.
“The President asked the Speaker if he has already talked with the coalition partners [in the House]like NPC and NP. But so far, the support is overwhelming for the Speaker. The Speaker himself said that Gwen has expressed her support for his Speakership,” Evardone told reporters in a chance interview.
Evardone was referring to the House Majority bloc which is composed of the ruling LP, Nationalist People’s Coalition (NPC), Nacionalista Party (NP) and National Union Party (NUP).
The NUP has Garcia’s father, Pablo, as one of its leaders. Pablo will lose his Congressional seat by June 30 since he lost in the May polls.
