THE entry of subsidized imported rice into the wet markets this week is a welcome respite to Filipino consumers already reeling from record inflation.

On Monday, the National Food Authority (NFA) announced that it had begun distributing lower-priced rice to outlets in Mindanao, particularly General Santos City, and the Bicol Region. In the Caraga Region, NFA rice is already sold by 188 accredited retailers in the Agusan and Surigao provinces as well as Dinagat and Siargao islands. Metro Manila markets are expected to get fresh supplies today, Wednesday, weather permitting.
