• University of Cebu cagers to compete in China next month

The University of Cebu Webmasters will represent the Philippines in the 9th edition of the Zhen Cheng Gong men’s basketball tournament slated October 21 to 26 at the Nanan City Stadium in Fujian Province, China.

Commercial teams from South Korea, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Taiwan and Fujian have confirmed their participation in the week-long tournament organized by the city government of Nanan, Fujian Province and the Nanan City Overseas Chinese Sports Association.

Alvin Tai Lian, president of the Asia-Pacific University Sports Union, will be the head of the Philippine delegation while Atty. Baldomero Estenzo will act as team manager.

Basketball Association of the Philippines Secretary General Graham Lim said the UC Webmasters was invited through a letter sent to UC President Atty. Augusto W. Go, who forwarded the invitation to Atty. Baldomero, BAP Regional Director Lorenzo “Chao” Sy and Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation, Inc. (CESAFI) Commissioner Felix O. Tiukinhoy, Jr.

Estenzo has instructed UC Webmasters coach Atty. Kenneth Kernn Sesante, the former team skipper and his former law student, to prepare their travel documents.

Estenzo is also considering to bring former UC players, back-to-back PBA MVP June Mar Fajardo and Brian Heruela, both playing for San Miguel, and Dondon Hontiveros of Alaska.

Estenzo said he is hoping that the three players will be allowed to play for the UC Webmasters, saying by that time, the PBA Governor’s Cup is already over.
