• UN’s Ban pays courtesy call on President Aquino


    United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki Moon called on President Benigno Aquino 3rd on Saturday ahead of his visit to the areas devastated y by Super Typhoon Yolanda, a Palace official said Saturday.
    Present at Ban’s courtesy call were: Foreign Affairs Secretary Albert del Rosario, Defense Secretary Voltaire Gazmin, Yolanda Rehabilitation Czar Panfilo Lacson, Secretary Dinky Soliman of the Department of Social Welfare and Development and Secretary Julia Abad of the Presidential Management Staff.
    “The President thanked the United Nations for supporting our efforts for relief and rehabilitation of those affected by Yolanda. They talked about the development of these efforts,” Deputy Spokesperson Abigail Valte said.
    The United Nations launched a $348 million (P14.6 billion) flash appeal in November in aid of the victims and areas affected by Yolanda. The response from foreign governments has been overwhelming, with foreign donations reaching P23 billion.
    The National Economic and Development Authority placed the cost of the damage at P571 billion.
    Congress has passed a P14.6 billion supplemental budget for Yolanda rehabilitation.
