The Department of Tourism (DOT) flew some 50 guests, including 12 diplomats and tourism ministers, to Balesin Island in Quezon province after the four-day United Nations World Tourism Organization’s (UNWTO) 6th International Conference on Sustainable Tourism held in Manila recently. A festive welcome greeted the entourage headed by Tourism Secretary Wanda Tulfo-Teo, including UNWTO Secretary General Taleb Rifai. The guests arrived at the private airport that features a built-in rainwater-catchment and filtration system that sustains the island’s water supply. Alphaland Corp., developer and operator of Balesin Island’s exclusive membership resort club, treated the group to sumptuous meals of Filipino dishes made from the island’s farm produce, and a day-long tour of the diversely-themed villas, vineyard, fish and crab farm, irrigation system. As one of the UNWTO conference sponsors, Alphaland handed to Rifai euro 10,000 (P560,000) as donation for its program on sustainable tourism. The entourage then proceeded to Palawan to experience the Puerto Princesa Underground River. The UNWTO delegation capped the day with the ribbon cutting of the World’s Best Island Travel Expo 2017 at Robinson’s Place Palawan.
