UNIVERSITY of the Philippines (UP) arranged a one-game final with De La Salle University after a 2-1 victory over Ateneo de Manila University in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines Season 78 women’s football action at the Moro Lorenzo Field.
Sophomore BG Sta. Clara netted a brace as the Lady Maroons clinched their second straight championship appearance.
Ending its elimination round campaign in second place with 14 points, UP’s win practically ended idle Far Eastern University’s three-year reign. The Lady Tamaraws have eight points with one game left in the elims.
Kyla Inquig and Shannon Arthur found the back of the net as the Lady Archers bested University of Santo Tomas, 2-1, in a no-bearing match for a league-best 19 points.
Sta. Clara opened the scoring for the Lady Maroons in the 46th minute before Lady Eagles skipper Cam Rodriguez scored two minutes later for the equalizer.
UP regained the advantage via Sta. Clara’s 53rd minute strike and protected the lead until the end.
Ateneo remains in fourth spot with six points, two off third-running FEU in the chase for a podium finish. The Tigresses are at the bottom of the table with four points.
The one-game championship will be announced later.
