University of the Philippines (UP) stunned defending champion Ateneo de Manila University, 19-25, 25-22, 25-17, 25-22, to cruise to its fifth win on Sunday in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines Season 78 women’s volleyball at The Arena in San Juan City.
The Lady Maroons grabbed the solo third spot with 5-3 while the Lady Eagles allowed De La Salle University to join them on top with identical 6-2.
National University (NU), meanwhile, ended a three-game losing streak with a remarkable three sets win over Adamson University, 25-18, 25-12, 25-18.
Myla Pablo scored 14 points on 10 kills, three service points and a block, while towering Jaja Santiago got 13 points and Roselyn Doria had seven points to send the Lady Bulldogs to a 4-4 win-loss record.
Adamson fell to 3-5 as no players were able to score in double figures.
In the men’s division, NU also marked a victory as it stopped Adamson’s six-game winning run with a 25-23, 25-23, 25-27, 25-22 victory behind the spectacular performance of Madz Gampong, James Natividad, Bryan Bagunas and Kim Malabunga.
Gampong hit 17 kills for 19 points to lead the Bulldogs, who were supported by the 14 points of Natividad and Bagunas.
Malabunga tallied 13 points and Philip Saura also had 11 points also for the Bulldogs.
