University of the Philippines (UP) halted a five-game losing streak by beating Adamson University 89-84 on Saturday in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines Season 78 men’s basketball tournament at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.
A week after losing their last game in the first round against the Falcons (68-73), the Fighting Maroons made a strong start and sustained the momentum until the end of the game to avenge their loss to the Falcons last week. UP, with the win, improved its win-loss record to 3-5.
“We were down in the last three weeks, but last night we had our team building to regain our confidence,” said UP coach Rensy Bajar.
Jett Manuel, who posted 16 points and eight rebounds, said that the victory was dedicated to their injured teammate Jerson Prado who hurt his right leg last week during their game with Adamson.
Henry Asilum notched 19 points including three triples, Diego Dario contributed 14 points plus five assists, and Agustini Amar had 13 points for the Fighting Maroons.
Andres Desiderio and Piero Longa made eight points apiece also for UP.
In the other game, University of the East (UE) also snapped a four-game losing streak by beating defending champion National University, 52-47, improving its win-loss record to 3-5.
Chris Javier posted 16 points and nine rebounds while Paul Varilla had 10 points and nine rebounds for the Red Warriors.
NU, UE and UP are now tied in the fifth to seventh places all carrying identical 3-5 win-loss records.
