UNIVERSITY of the Philippines resisted University of Santo Tomas’ strong charge and scored a stunning 11-25, 25-20, 16-25, 25-18, 15-11 victory in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) Season 77 women’s volleyball at The Arena in San Juan City.
After lagging behind in points in the first three sets, the Lady Fighting Maroons banked on the prowess of Nicole Ann Tiamzon and Angeli Pauline Araneta to bounce back in the fourth and fifth sets to improve their win-loss record to 5-7. UP is now occupying the fifth spot.
Tiamzon notched 15 points—all by kills—Araneta posted 15 points, while Vina Vera Alinas, who also drew five blocks from Marian Alisa Buitre, scored 11 points for the Lady Fighting Maroons.
EJ Laure led the Growling Tigresses with 20 points while Pam Lastimosa and Carmela Tunay had 14 points each. UST dropped to the sixth spot with a 5-8 win-loss record.
Earlier in the men’s division, Mark Espejo posted 21 points as Ateneo De Manila University bagged its ninth straight win by crushing Far Eastern University, 17-25, 25-17, 25-17, 27-25. Ateneo improved its win-loss record to 10-2 to boost its Final Four campaign.
FEU’s record fell to 5-8.
UST beat De La Salle University, 25-23, 25-18, 21-25, 27-25, behind Mark Gil Alfara’s 23 points and Arnold Bautista’s 20 points. UST and Adamson University with identical 9-3 win-loss records are tied in the second to third spots.
