SIBALOM, Antique: Three miners were killed and six others reported missing after an open-pit coal mine at the Semirara Mining Corporation in Caluya, Antique collapsed.
Initial report gathered by Antique Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council Officer Broderick Train showed the workers were working on the below sea level mining in Panian when it collapsed about 4 a.m. Friday.
Train said the area is quite far from the communities and so it has no effect to the community people.
Likewise, he said that the Semirara Mining Corporation has its own capability for the search and rescue operations that is ongoing.
The Panian Pit was the same area that also collapsed in 2013 that claimed the lives of several miners.
Train, meanwhile, is waiting for further report from the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Officer there.
A statement from the mining firm said “management has condoled with the families of the victims and is giving them full support”.
“It is also coordinating with national and local authorities to keep them updated on the search and rescue efforts and other necessary measures including ensuring the adequate supply of coal for power generation since it has stopped operations in the affected area in compliance with an order from the Department of Energy.
“The company is investigating the cause of the accident in coordination with authorities,” a statement sent to The Manila Times read.
