The University of Perpetual Help System DALTA (UPHSD) Altas, behind Earl Scottie Thompson’s impressive performance, crushed the San Sebastian College (SSC) Stags, 92-76,on Saturday in the 90th National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) seniors basketball tournament at The Arena in San Juan City.
Thompson, a strong candidate for the Most Valuable Player plum, scored 11 points in the pivotal period to help secure the Altas’ 12th win in 16 matches and move a step closer to the Final Four. He finished with 29 points on top of nine rebounds and eight assists.
The victory earned the Altas a playoff slot for the fourth semifinals berth.
The Digos, Davao del Sur native Thompson is now leading the statistical race for the MVP honor, which he said is not important so long as his team makes it to the semifinals and bag its first ever NCAA basketball crown.
“More than anything else, our goal is to make it to the Final Four and this win pushes us closer to achieving it,” said Thompson in Filipino.
Juneric Baloria and Harold Arboleda, who are hoping to get a contract with new Philippine Basketball Association team NLEX Road Warriors, provided the needed support finishing with 24 and 16 points respectively.
Both Baloria and Arboleda supported Thompson in a blazing 29-point run in the fourth quarter en route to the win that dropped the Stags’ win-loss record to 5-12.
“They stepped up big and played aggressive when we needed it most,” said Perpetual Help coach Aric del Rosario.
