KAYAPA, Nueva Vizcaya: Heavy downpour with thunderstorms wrecked infrastructure and caused some P3-million damage on agriculture, prompted the local municipal council to place this mountain town under a state of calamity.

Officials said there are 11 villages in the municipality, which were affected as heavy rains caused huge landslides from mountains and upland agriculture areas.

Mayor John Balasya said that since the July 1990 killer quake, this is the second time “we suffered this calamity only caused by torrential rains with thunderstorms.”

Balasya said the numerous landslides along the provincial, municipal and barangay roads with the town was triggered by the three-hour heavy rain which has paralyzed transportation of farmers and commuters par-ticularly along the villages of San Fabian, Pingkian and Besong.

”Upland vegetable plantations and the cut flower industry of the municipality was severely affected by flashfloods,” he said.
