• Upsets highlight PNG tae kwon do event


    UPSETS took center stage in the taekwondo event of 2014 National Games at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium on Sunday.

    Charizza Alombro of the University of the Philippines defeated Karina Paladin, a member of the national training pool B, in the flyweight finals.

    Majority of the Philippine team A are in Uzbekistan for the 2014 Asian Taekwondo championship.

    Another member of the training pool, Abi Cham, settled for the bronze medal behind Merill Mercado, who won the gold, and silver medalist Maria Thelma Cadile in the bantamweight class.

    Mercado and Cadile are both from San Beda College.

    In other taekwondo bouts, Irene Bermejo of Ateneo won over Dymyr Lobator of University of the East in the bantamweight category, Arianne Helouise Asegurado of the national team defeated teammate Bianca Go in the featherweight division and Joanne Esguerra of UP defeated Janin Mercaida of Baguio in the lightweight class.

    National team’s Clouie Bolinas won over teammate Patricia Gonzales in the welterweight division and Fila Saberon of Far Eastern University defeated Kimmi de la Rea of Mapua to grab the middleweight gold. Ysabel Mercado of University of the East proved too much for Jessy Azarcon of Rizal Technological University.

    In men’s competition, Daniel Perez of San Beda College won in the welterweight class, Harris Zapata of San Sebastian College in the middleweight division and Nicole Zapata in the heavyweight category.

    Jason Locsin gave San Beda its third gold at the expense of UP’s Justin Castillo in the finweight category.
