US Ambassador Goldberg to lead Memorial Day rites


US Ambassador to the Philippines Philip Goldberg will lead the Memorial Day ceremony at the Manila American Cemetery and Memorial in Fort Bonifacio on Sunday, May 29 at 8 a.m. Memorial Day is an American holiday observed on the last Monday of May and honors the men and women who were killed while serving in the U.S. Armed Forces. Memorial Day, originally named Decoration Day, originated in the years following the American Civil War. It was named Memorial Day by federal law in 1971. Philippine government officials, representatives from the diplomatic and consular corps, and members of the American and Filipino veterans’ communities will participate in the program of remembrance, honoring those men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in defense of freedom and democracy.
