A member of the Obama Cabinet will be in the Philippines this week to meet with government officials and business leaders in a move designed to deepen the business partnership between the long-time allies.
In a statement, the US Embassy in Manila on Monday said US Secretary of Commerce Penny Pritzker and her hosts will discuss US economic engagement in the Asia-Pacific.
The US-Asean Business Council and a group of American business leaders said Pritzker’s visit is “a way to help deepen the partnerships between [the US and Philippine]governments and businesses.”
Asean—Association of Southeast Asian Nations—groups the Philippines, Vietnam, Thailand, Singapore, Myanmar, Malaysia, Laos, Indonesia, Cambodia and Brunei Darussalam.
Pritzker’s visit “reaffirms the United States’ commitment to the Philippines and the entire Asean region, specifically with respect to our economic and commercial ties,” the US Embassy said.
Her itinerary includes meetings with President Benigno Aquino 3rd, Secretary of Trade and Industry Gregory Domino, Secretary of Finance Cesar Purisima and other key Philippine government officials and industry movers.
