• US Cabinet secretary to visit PH

A member of the Obama Cabinet will be in the Philippines this week to meet with government officials and business leaders in a move designed to deepen the business partnership between the long-time allies.

In a statement, the US Embassy in Manila on Monday said US Secretary of Commerce Penny Pritzker and her hosts will discuss US economic engagement in the Asia-Pacific.

The US-Asean Business Council and a group of American business leaders said Pritzker’s visit is “a way to help deepen the partnerships between [the US and Philippine]governments and businesses.”

Asean—Association of Southeast Asian Nations—groups the Philippines, Vietnam, Thailand, Singapore, Myanmar, Malaysia, Laos, Indonesia, Cambodia and Brunei Darussalam.

Pritzker’s visit “reaffirms the United States’ commitment to the Philippines and the entire Asean region, specifically with respect to our economic and commercial ties,” the US Embassy said.

Her itinerary includes meetings with President Benigno Aquino 3rd, Secretary of Trade and Industry Gregory Domino, Secretary of Finance Cesar Purisima and other key Philippine government officials and industry movers.

Pritzker is a known entrepreneur, civic leader and philanthropist.

She is also the chairman of the newly launched Skills for America’s Future, a public-private partnership of the private sector, the federal government and community colleges.

The project aims to prepare workers for 21st century jobs.

Pritzker’s talk on the US economic engagement in the Asia-Pacific will be held at Ballroom 3 of the New World Hotel in Makati City on June 4, 11 a.m.

The event is jointly hosted by the US Embassy in Manila and the US Foreign Commercial Services in cooperation with the American Chamber of Commerce Philippines, the Management Association of the Philippines and the Makati Business Club.
