The US Embassy in Manila and its affiliated offices will be closed to the public on Monday, May 26, 2014, in observance of the US Memorial Day, a US federal holiday, the embassy said in a statement.
Memorial Day is an American holiday observed on the last Monday of May and honors the men and women who lost their lives while serving in the US military.
This holiday was originally known as Decoration Day. It originated in the years following the Civil War and became an official federal holiday in 1971.
In the US, the flag of the United States is flown at half mast from dawn until noon on this day. Many people visit cemeteries and memorials on Memorial Day, which is traditionally the start of summer. Others hold picnics, sports events and family gatherings on this weekend.
Fashion conscious Americans wear white clothing, particularly shoes, from Memorial Day until Labor Day.
Regular services at the US Embassy will resume on Tuesday, May 27, 2014.
