THE United States Embassy in Manila and its affiliated offices will be closed today in commemoration of the death of former senator Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino Jr.
The embassy and its affiliated offices will resume regular services on Friday, August 22, an advisory said.
The late former senator is the father of President Benigno Aquino 3rd.
His death on August 21, 1983 at the then-Manila International Airport (later renamed after him to Ninoy Aquino International Airport) triggered a massive and nationwide protest against the strongman rule of then-President Ferdinand Marcos.
Ninoy was a staunch critic of Marcos.
His death also paved the way for the presidency of his wife, Corazon Aquino.
The former senator’s death anniversary is a special non-working holiday as declared by Malacañang.
President Aquino and his family will mark the day with a simple gathering, the Palace earlier said.
