• US Embassy sets up community empowerment fund


    The United States Embassy in Manila, in partnership with five American Spaces in Mindanao, has announced the launch of the US Embassy Community Empowerment Fund. The fund offers a single grant of up to $5,000 to local nongovernment organizations in Mindanao to promote entrepreneurship, rule of law, English language, civic engagement, education, and the environment.

    Hosted in embassies, schools, libraries, and other partner institutions worldwide, American Spaces are platforms for providing information about the United States, our policy, culture, and values; English language learning; alumni activities, and information about study in the US.

    The guidelines for fund proposals are as follows:

    Proposals must support any or a combination of the following themes: entrepreneurship, rule of law, English language, civic engagement, education, or the environment.

    The applicant must partner with an American Space at one of the following universities: Notre Dame University, Cotabato City; Notre Dame of Jolo College; Mindanao State University, Tawi-Tawi; Mindanao State University, Marawi City; or Ateneo de Zamboanga University.

    Proposals should include at least three activities, at least one of which should take place in one of the above listed American Spaces and utilize the technology available there.

    The NGO applicant must be based in one of the following areas: Cotabato region, Zamboanga peninsula, Sulu, Tawi-Tawi, or Lanao del Sur.

    Each non-governmental organization is allowed to submit a single application.

    Applicants are encouraged to include additional partners such as local government units, religious and community leaders, Young Southeast Asean Leaders Initiative members, and/or US government alumni.

    Proposals must include a media plan that incorporates traditional and social media.

    The target audiences should include out-of-school youth or women/girls.

    Project implementation must be completed within one year of the grant award.
