US President Barack Obama has canceled his trip to the Philippines next week, a Malacanang official confirmed on Wednesday.
The cancellation came after the US government went on a shutdown on Tuesday.
In a text message, Strategic Communication Secretary Ramon Carandang said that despite the cancellation, the Philippine government was still looking forward to a continued strong working relationship with Obama.
Obama was scheduled to visit the Philippines on October 11 and 12 as part of his four-nation swing through Southeast Asia.
Reports said the US President canceled his trips to Malaysia and Philippines so he can better deal with the government shutdown, which transpired after the Congress–composed majorly of Obama’s Democrats and Republicans–failed to reach a compromise on the health care reform most commonly known as Obamacare.
