Starting off the New Year with a kick, Los Angeles-based indie pop band Capital Cities comes to Manila to perform singles from their new album, In a Tidal Wave of Mystery in Ayala Malls this weekend.
The Californian electro-pop duo Ryan Merchant and Sebu Simonian created buzz after releasing their debut EP in 2011 with the lead single, “Safe and Sound” that hit no. 1 in the United States Alternative Songs chart. The single was later released in the United Kingdom in 2013 and was used in a German Vodafone commercial.
Ironically, the Californian duo met in classified ads website Craigslist in 2008 as composers and songwriters who wrote jingles until they formed their band in 2010.
“We were constantly writing everyday for two years, and it became like practice to us. We were creating something new everyday, and some of them were not used and so that’s what we used in our band,” Simonian said in a press conference held at the Shangri-La Hotel in Makati City on January 10.
Other hit singles in their album include “Patience Got Us Nowhere Fast,” I Sold My Bed, Not Stereo,” and “Kangaroo Court,” which also gained popularity when it was released in 2012.
“Safe and Sound” gained a lot of Internet exposure, earning them the spot to top the billboard chart for Alternative and German singles chart in 2013. They also sold out their tickets for the New York leg of their “Dancing with Strangers” tour two months before the show.
Their music video of the hit single was nominated for Best in Art Direction and won the Best in Visual Effects at the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards.
Promising a “physical experience of music” in their shows, Merchant said that their live performances involve a lot of dancing and moving, to “build a world around the song to give the fans a full experience of it.”
The duo creates artistic backdrops and is heavily involved in creating not only the music, but also the artwork and the video production that comes along with it.
Capital Cities played in Alabang Town Center Activity Center and Glorietta Activity Center on January 11, and is set to play at the Marquee Mall Activity Center today at 3 p.m. and Trinoma Activity Center at 7 p.m.
