WASHINGTON, D.C.: The US Supreme Court on Wednesday (Thursday in Manila) heard arguments about whether the authorities have the right to force thousands of legal immigrants to endure months or even years of detention without a hearing.

The issue has taken on special significance following the presidential election of Donald Trump, who has vowed to crack down on illegal immigration and ramp up deportations when he takes office in January.
