• US will host Centennial Copa America

NEW YORK: The United States will host a Centennial Copa America next year with regional football officials and the US Soccer Federation in final talks despite corruption concerns that threatened the event, ESPN reported on Thursday (Friday in Manila). Citing unnamed sources, the US-based sports television network said an official announcement could come as soon as Friday. Officials from North American regional governing body CONCACAF and its South American counterpart, CONMEBOL, were working with the US as host and organizer of the one-off, 16-team event to mark the 100th anniversary of the South American championship tournament. The 10 South American teams — including Brazil and Argentina — would be joined by the US squad, Mexico and four other North American regional teams.
