CEBU CITY: The University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) on Sunday put on a gallant stand and handed Southwestern University (SWU) its first loss this season of the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. volleyball tournament in a preview of the Women’s division finals, 27-25, 25-18, 18-22, 25-22.
USJ-R took the first two sets but SWU answered back and nabbed the third set 25-22.
USJ-R was trailing early in the fourth set but slowly chipped away the Lady Cobras’ lead and finally took the lead, 17-16, after a spike from SWU’s Floremel Rodriguez went out of bounds.
USJ-R took a 22-18 lead after a net violation by SWU.
The Lady Cobras, however, refused to bow and scored two straight points from Janelle Cabahug and Rodriguez to trim it down to 22-20.
Paula Maninang answered with a spike and Cabahug gave USJ-R a crucial point with her attack going out of bounds for 24-21 lead.
SWU scored one more point before Linlyn Torada scored the winning point, 25-22, from a spike that barely went in.
USJ-R and SWU face off in the first match of the Women’s division finals on Nov. 6.
USJ-R fell short fell short in its bid for the title last year after losing to SWU. USJ-R also lost its meeting with SWU in the elimination round last month.
In the boys divisions, USJ-R also won, beating the University of Cebu (UC), 25-17, 25-27, 25-14. Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu (SHS-AdC) outclassed Cebu Eastern College (CEC) – 25-10 and 25-8.
USJ-R took the top spot of Group A with a 3-0 slate, while UC dropped down to No. 2 with a 2-1 record.
DBTC is steady at third, followed by SHS-AdC at fourth with a 1-2 record and CEC is still at the bottom with a 0-3 record.
