The University of San Jose Recoletos Jaguars (USRJ) posted its very first win in the FilOil Flying V pre-season collegiate basketball tournament after trouncing the Emilio Aguinaldo College (EAC) Generals, 85-74, at the San Juan Arena on Friday.
The Jaguars mangled the Generals right at the get-go, opening their physical match-up with a seven-point advantage, 19-12.
Despite a 23-point, seven-rebound performance from EAC’s Filipino-African standout Sydney Onwubere, the Generals still failed to subdue USJR and were down 37-26 at the half.
The UN Avenue-based ballers gave their foes from the Visayas region a fright by grabbing a total of 22 points in the third quarter but USRJ veteran James Regallado stepped up to quell the offensive with an impressive three-out-of-five performance from beyond the arc.
The foul-plagued final quarter commenced with the USJR keen to end the bout with Kevin Villafranca leading the charge with 16 points and seven rebounds.
Another Cebuano stalwart Miguel Gastador made his presence felt in the Jaguars’ win after three games in the pre-season competition by clinching 10 points and 10 rebounds.
