University of Santo Tomas (UST) targets for a sweep in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) Season 79 men’s and women’s beach volleyball tournament today at the SM Sands by the Bay in Pasay City.
The UST Tiger Spikers will face the Far Eastern University (FEU) Tamaraws at 9 a.m., while last season’s runner up Lady Tamaraws will battle the Tigresses at 11 a.m. on the fourth day of the tournament.
In Day 3, the duo of Kris Roy Guzman and Anthony Arbasto of UST eliminated the tandem of Fauzi Ismali and Madslan Gampong of National University (NU), 21-15, 21-14. Adamson University’s Rence Melgar and John Philip Yude also bowed down to UST’s Guzman and Arbasto, 21-12, 21-17.
However, FEU’s Jude Garcia and Richard Solis suffered a winless third day after faltering against University of the Philippines (UP)’s Alfred Valvuena and Wendel Miguel, 18-21, 16-21, while NU’s Ismali and Gampong crushed FEU in an extended match, 21-12, 18-21, 15-7.
In the women’s division, UST’s Cherry Ann Rondina and Jem Nicole Guttirez dominated NU’s Aiko Urdas and Roma Joy Doromal, 21-18, 21-16. Adamson’s Jessica Galanza and Bernadette Flora succumbed 21-9, 21-13 to Rondina-Guttirez tandem.
The current second-seed team FEU Lady Tamarraws kept an unblemished record in the women’s division. FEU’s Bernadette Pons and Kyla Atienza avenged their male-counterparts as they crushed NU’s Urdas and Doromal, 21-6, 21-16, and UP’s Arielle Estranero and Diana Carlos, 21-16, 21-8.
De La Salle University recorded split results in the women’s division after the reigning most valuable player Kim Fajardo substituted Desiree Cheng, joining Ernestine Tiamzon in the doubles.
The Tiamzon-Fajardo duo succumbed to Adamson’s Galanza-Flora tandem, 24-22, 16-21, 13-15 but managed to come back in the winning column after beating University of the East’s Judit Abil and Angelica Dacaymat, 21-15, 21-11.
Ateneo de Manila University also had split results in the men’s division after Mark Espejo and Esmilso Polvorosa dominated UE’s Geric Garcia and Ruvince Arbot, 21-13, 21-10, but faltered to UP’s Valvuena and Miguel, 15-21, 17-21.
UST is currently No.1 with 6-0, while FEU is No.2 in the men’s and women’s division.
