University of Santo Tomas jins Rodolfo Reyes and Jocel Ninobla delivered the country’s first gold medal in the 2014 Asean University Games being held in Palembang, Indonesia.
Reyes and Ninobla flaunted a flawless routine to grab the top spot in the poomsae mixed pair category, beating their rivals from host Indonesia and Thailand.
Besides the gold of Reyes and Ninobla, the Philippines also secured two bronzes in the individual poomsae event.
Raphael Enrico Mella of De La Salle University (male) and Juvenile Crisostomo of Far Eastern University (female) both ended up third in their respective divisions.
The Filipinos are aiming to surpass their two-gold, 12-silver, 16-bronze showing in the 2012 edition held in Vientiane, Laos with tae kwon do sparring bets Christian Al dela Cruz and Ernest John Mendoza earning the two mints.
In volleyball, the Philippines, represented by Ateneo de Manila University, got off to a hot start, beating Malaysia, 25-21, 18-25, 15-25, 25-8, for its first win in the women’s division. The Filipinas were scheduled to play Indonesia on Wednesday.
Besides tae kwon do and volleyball, the Philippines also has entries in swimming, athletics and table tennis. EMIL C. NOGUERA
