UST keeps Final Four hopes alive


UNIVERSITY of Santo Tomas (UST) thumped winless University of the East (UE), 25-10, 25-22, 25-11, on Saturday to keep its Final Four bid alive in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines Season 77 women’s volleyball tourney at The Arena in San Juan City.

Playing with a sense of urgency, the Growling Tigresses didn’t waste any time in beating UE in three sets. UST improve its win-loss record to 6-8 and advanced one-game ahead of University of the Philippines (5-8).

The Lady Fighting Maroons need to win their remaining game on Sunday against National University (7-6) to stay in contention for the Final Four.

Rookie EJ Laure, the daughter of Philippine Basketball Association player Eddie Laure, posted 11 points—all by kills—while Pam Lastimosa finished with 10 points, and Marivic Meneses nine points with five blocks for UST.

The Lady Red Warriors ended the season with no win in 14 games.

In the men’s division, NU outlasted Adamson University, 26-28, 25-17, 25-17, 25-21, behind Edwin Tolentino’s 19 points to improve to improve its win-loss record to 10-4. The Falcons and the Bulldogs both have identical 10-4 records.

UST prevailed over Ateneo De Manila University in five sets, 25-15, 22-25, 25-23, 17-25, 15-13, to notch its 11th win after 14 games. Ateneo also ended the season with an 11-3 win-loss record.

Mark Gil Alfafara led UST with 22 points.

Ateneo will battle Adamson while UST meets NU in the Final Four. Ateneo and UST both hold a twice-to-beat advantage against their respective Final Four rivals.
