Defending champion University of Santo Tomas (UST) is pulling away in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines Season 78 general championship.
The Growling Tigers have so far earned 224 points – 25 points ahead of second-placer De La Salle University (199).
UST dominated the women’s judo, men’s taekwondo, women’s athletics and poomsae events then bagged nine runner-up finishes.
They wound up second in the men’s basketball, men’s beach volleyball, men’s table tennis, men’s athletics, men and women’s fencing, women’s tae kwon do and men’s judo.
La Salle has won the women’s beach volleyball, and men and women’s table tennis crowns before placing second in the men’s swimming and men’s badminton.
The Green Archers also claimed nine third place trophies – women’s basketball, women’s swimming, women’s badminton, women’s fencing, men and women’s tae kwon do, poomsae, and men’s judo.
Ateneo de Manila University holds the third spot with 172 points as the Blue Eagles ruled the men’s beach volleyball, men and women’s swimming, and men’s tae kwon do while University of the Philippines, owner of the women’s badminton title, collected 167 points for fourth place.
University of the East, winner in the men and women’s fencing, and women’s tae kwon do, took the fifth position with 135 points followed by Far Eastern University – the men’s basketball and men’s athletics champions (131), National University – which topped the women’s basketball, men and women’s tennis, and men’s badminton (112), and Adamson University (43) – the only team without a championship this season, so far.
The five remaining events being played are volleyball, chess, softball, baseball and football.
The league awards 15 points for first place, 12 for second, 10 for third, eight for fourth, six for fifth, four for sixth, two for seventh and one for eighth.
