University of Santo Tomas (UST) claimed three gold and one silver medals to rule the University Athletic Association of the Philippines Season 78 tae kwon do poomsae competition held at the Ateneo Blue Eagle Gym in Quezon City.
Bannered by world championship veteran Jocel Lyn Ninobla, Raisa Libiran and Jhoana Lyde Razon, UST dominated the women’s team event, beating second-placer Far Eastern University (FEU) and third-placer University of the Philippines (UP).
UST continued its impressive showing in the men’s team catageory as Vidal Marvin Gabriel, Adrian Meynard Ang and Jerel Anthony Dalida took the top honors, sending UP in the second spot and De La Salle University in the No. 3 position.
The Growling Tigers’ third gold was delivered by Gabriel and Ninobla in the mixed pair class with La Salle’s Rico Mella and Rinna Babanto, and UP’s Jay Buenavista and Janna Dominique Oliva settling for second and third, respectively.
Rodolfo Reyes Jr. delivered UST’s lone silver in the men’s individual event.
“The team exceeded my expectation. I’m so proud of all of them,” said UST mentor Rani Ortega, a member of the women’s trio team that won gold medal in the World Poomsae Championship.
Season 77 titlist UP wound up second with one gold, one silver and three bronzes followed by La Salle with one gold, one silver and two bronzes.
Babanto, on the other hand, topped the women’s individual event while UP’s Dustin Mella reigned supreme in the men’s individual category.
