UNIVERSITY of Santo Tomas (UST) grabbed the top spot in the men’s division Tuesday night in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines Season 77 tae kwon do tournament at The Arena in San Juan City.
The Growling Tigers opened their campaign with a 6-1 beating of the Far Eastern University (FEU) Tamaraws and then they nipped the University of the East (UE) Red Warriors, 4-3, for a 2-0 record.
UST suffered a narrow 3-4 loss to Ateneo in the women’s side.
Thea Bermejo, Weedee Valenzuela, Kyla Relucio and Frances Siapno delivered victories for the Lady Eagles, the last year’s sixth placers who tied the defending champion Tigresses at 1-1.
La Salle took the women’s lead with a 2-0 slate by nipping FEU, 4-3, and National University, 6-1.
The Archers, meanwhile, began their title-retention campaign in the men’s division on a winning note with a 5-2 tripping of Ateneo.
Paolo Jazmines, Kirk Barbosa, Josafat Licayan, Kyle Uy and Karl delos Santos posted wins to help La Salle take the lead.
In other morning men’s match, UE trounced UP, 5-2.
