UST to showcase ‘Thomasian’ culture in UAAP 79th season

The opening ceremonies of the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) Season 79 will be simple yet cultural as compared to previous editions according to this season’s host University of Santo Tomas (UST).

“We are more than glad to host the UAAP 79th season. It will be simple but we will welcome them with warm smiles,” UST Director of Office of Public Affairs Giovanna Fontanilla said on Tuesday in a news conference at the UST Quadricentennial Pavilion in Manila.

UST will hold the opening rites on September 3 at the Plaza Mayor in front of the school’s main building.

Department Secretary of Institute of Physical Education and Athletics Gilda Ma. Paz Kamus said that they decided to separate the opening rites from the opening game matches to prevent undue fatigue among the athletes.

Kamus, who is also a member of the UAAP board, added that they want the athletes and coaches from other universities to experience the Thomasian culture.

Among the features of the opening day are a ballroom dancing contest and a Dare to Dream concert.

It was also announced during the news conference that former Senator Rene Saguisag Jr. would stay as UAAP basketball commissioner.

The men’s basketball competition will begin on September 4.
