University of Santo Tomas (UST) bet Elbren Neri pulled off an upset win against Southeast Asian Games silver medalist Mervin Guarte in the men’s 800-meter event in Day 2 of the 2016 Philippine National Open Invitational Athletics Championships at the PhilSports Track and Field Stadium in Pasig City.
Neri posted a time record of one minute and 52.5 seconds while Guarye finished third with 1:53.31. Air Force bet Wenlie Maulas who was .4 milliseconds behind Neri finished second.
A standout from the University of the East, Macrose Dichoso also made his presence felt.
Dichoso grabbed the early lead over veterans Christabel Martes and Mary Grace De Los Santos to claim the crown in the women’s 10,000m in 39:27.7. Martes, 22.7 seconds behind Dichoso, finished second while De Los Santos finished third with 40:55.6.
As expected, Southeast Asian Games champion Christopher Ulboc won the gold in the men’s 3,000m steeplechase with 9:11.79.
Eli Sunang, husband of former Southeast Asia Games long jump queen Marestella Torres, ruled the men’s shot put event with an output of 15.31 meters.
In the men’s long jump, Filipino-American Donovant Arriola cleared 7.48 meters on his sixth attempt to defeat College of Saint Benilde bet Julian Reem Fuentes (7.41). Another Fil-Am Jessica Lyn Barnard topped the women’s 800-meter run in 2:11.65 while Tiffany Tang of Hong Kong won the girls’ high jump with a record of 1.69 meters.
The other gold medalists were Rosie Villarito (women’s javelin throw), Charlie de la Cruz (boy’s 3,000m steeplechase), Junrel Bendoy (men’s 10,000m walk), Krisha Sardenia (women’s 10,000m walk), Rojon Redoble (boys’ 800m run) and Louielyn Pamatian (girls’ 800m run).
