After the elimination round, Ateneo de Manila University’s Alyssa Valdez and De La Salle University’s Ara Galang remained as the top contenders for the Most Valuable Player (MVP) award in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines Season 77 women’s volleyball tournament.
Valdez, the reigning MVP, and Galang, the former co-MVP with teammate Abigail Marano, topped the scoring and spiking departments. They are also included in the top five in the service area.
The other candidates for the highest award are National University’s Jaja Santiago, Far Eastern University’s (FEU) Bernadeth Pons and University of the Philippines’ (UP) Nicole Tiamzon.
Santiago, Mika Reyes of La Salle, Ria Meneses of University of Santo Tomas, Mylene Paat of Adamson University and Geneveve Casugod of FEU led the list for the Best Blocker award while the Best Setter plum is a toss up between Julia Morado of Ateneo and Kim Fajardo of La Salle.
The Best Receiver and Best Diggers candidates are Denden Lazaro and Ella De Jesus of Ateneo, Christine Agno of FEU, Dancel Dusaran of UST, among others.
Action resumes on Saturday with third seed National University facing fourth pick FEU at 4 p.m. at the Araneta Coliseum in the first stage of the stepladder semifinals. The winner will advance to the second stage against No. 2 De La Salle University, which holds a twice-to-beat advantage.
Ateneo grabbed the first finals berth after sweeping the elimination round.
