The P40-million Marulas Public Market is set to open this year but officials of Valenzuela City, particularly Mayor Rexlon T. Gatchalian, seem unwilling to discuss the project.
The construction of the market is a joint project of the city government and Megabuild JPG Development Inc.
The project will give the city government more than P100 million in income yearly, according to Josie Acurantes, a planning officer at the Valenzuela City government.
Acurantes said the project will benefit the city because the city government will earn a
substantial income every year for 25 years even if it did not release any money.
The project was approved by the city council on May 25, 2015.
Acurantes said two companies won the bidding but Megabuild was chosen because its bid had add-ons. But when The Manila Times requested to get details of the project,
Acurantes said Chito Diwas of the city legal department has full knowledge of the deal.
When contacted by the Times, Diwas said he will have to double check the records of the projects. But when he was contacted again, he said he had been ordered by the mayor not to discuss the deal.
A personnel of the Public Information Office, Rafael Canete, also said only the mayor or the city administrator can discuss the project with the media.
