Van driver rams military truck to escape abductors


COTABATO CITY: A passenger van driver held hostage by two men outsmarted his captors by ramming the vehicle into a military truck, killing one of the suspects and wounding six others, including four soldiers in Lanao del Sur.

Philippine National Police in the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (PNP-ARMM) Director, Chief Supt. Ronald Estilles said the incident happened in Barangay Lalabuan, Balabagan town on Tuesday, and resulted in the death of Muktar Makawadib.

Injured were Muktar’s father Alicoshin, an unidentified companion and four soldiers who were not identified in the police report.

Estilles said that the van, driven by a certain Guialel, was on the way to Marawi City from Cotabato City after 12 noon on Tuesday when the aborted kidnapping occurred.

Police said the suspects commandeered the van, with Muktar taking over the steering wheel while his father held Guialel.

As the van was approaching Barangay Lalabuan, Guialel noticed a military truck loaded with soldiers, and he grabbed the steering wheel from Muktar, causing them to collide with the truck.

The soldiers brought the victims to a Cotabato hospital, where Muktar was declared dead on arrival. His father and a companion were in critical condition.

The van four soldiers suffered only minor bruises, while the van sustained minor damage.
