After two years of hosting Umagang Kay Ganda (UKG), Venus Raj says she never thought the most controversial story she’d handle would be her own.
As soon as news broke out that she and boyfriend Andrei Felix were removed from the show, rumors began to surface that the couple were being released because of complaints of their excessive PDA (public display of affection).
“Naku naloka kaya ako sa mga balita na ‘yon!,” she told The Manila Times during an interview set up by Watsons.
“Wala naman katotohanan yung PDA issue na ‘yon. Hindi ‘yon ang reason and we’re very professional with our work naman. Actually, kinausap kami ng bosses ng ABS-CBN, and they told us that they wanted to reformat UKG, and put in more people from the news. Kasi kami nila Andrei and Iya [Villania] we’re more of lifestyle and entertainment. We can do feature stories kaya lang kapag may breaking stories, hindi na namin linya ‘yon,” she explained.
The 2010 Miss Universe 4th Runner up-turned host, admits she felt sad and that she still misses the show and her fellow hosts.
“Noong mga unang weeks, there were times that I would still wake up at 4 a.m., tapos bigla ko na lang maalala, ‘Ay wala na pala akong trabaho!’”
Now that she is taking from hosting, Raj says she wants to try out acting. “Sobra ako nag-enjoy while doing Maalaala mo Kaya, kaya gusto ko ulit gawin yun. Kahit anong role siguro, drama, or mga romantic comedies . . . wala naman ako background sa acting pero feeling ko matututo ako and kaya ko siyang pag-aralan.”
And her choice of leading man? “Kay Piolo Pascual pa din ako!”
On looking and feeling good
With the Bpageant season in full swing, Venus Raj also graciously shared a few tips to aspiring beauty queens.
“It may sound cliché but I always tell the contestants that looking good starts from within. If you can’t appreciate your own beauty, who else will? When I joined Bb. Pilipinas ang dami ko kayang bashers, and kung iisipin mo lahat ng sinasabi ng ibang tao mawawala lang yung confidence mo. Feel good about yourself and love yourself.”
Helping women feel good about themselves is one of the reasons why Venus is once again part of Watson’s new
More Value, More Life campaign. As part of its brand refresh, the campaign invites customers to explore and experience Watsons’ extensive quality product range, carefully selected to make them “Look Good and Feel Great” every day.
Joining Venus as Watson’s ambassadors are three equally beautiful women; 2011 Miss Universe Third Runner-up Shamcey Supsup, 2009 Binibining Pilipinas-World Marie Ann Umali, and supermodel Fatima Rabago.
Shamcey shared Venus sentiments about beauty but adds that learning to take care of your skin is also very important. She initially confessed about her many insecurities during the interview, from being too tall and too thin, and said joining Bb. Pilipinas helped her overcome her lack of self confidence and appreciate the importance of skin care and make up.
“Feeling good is also about developing your confidence, I never had a beauty pageant experience before but when I decided to join Bb. Pilipinas, I gave it my all. I started with the basics—I took care of my skin and hair to build my confidence.”
For beauty queen Ann Umali, beauty starts with being happy and living healthy. “Drink lots of water, eat the right food, get enough sleep and share beauty tips with your best friend!” Ann narrates that whenever she and best friend Venus would drop by Watsons, they would head straight to the make-up area and test their favorite brands. “You can’t go wrong since there are beauty consultants always ready to give advice or suggest alternatives…we always feel extra beautiful after shopping!”
Finally, supermodel Fatima Rabago shared she felt more beautiful ever since she became a mother. “I just couldn’t picture my life without my daughter Daniela,” she relates. As for her beauty advice, Fatima cautioned women about comparing themselves to others. “Look at what you like most about yourself and just explore that and be confident, you don’t have to be super payat, to be beautiful.”
