The veterans proved they are still a force to reckon with as they whipped members of the national training pool in boxing at the 2014 Philippine Sports Commission-Philippine Olympic Committee (PSC-POC) National Games at the Rizal Memorial Sports Complex.
2010 Asian Games gold medalist Rey Saludar, representing Philippine Army, whipped national team mainstay Roldan Boncales Jr. 2-1, in the elite men’s flyweight (52-kgs), while Mario Fernandez proved too much for Philippine team member Jonas Bacho, 3-0, in the elite men’s bantamweight (56-kgs) class.
In other bouts, Dennis Galvan of Philippine Air Force (PAF) stopped Richard Bacala of Maasin in the first round of their elite men’s light welterweight (64-kgs) finals, and Joel Bacho was a 3-0 winner over PAF’s Orlando Tacuyan Jr. in the welterweight division.
Army’s Wilfredo Lopez escaped with a 2-1 win over PAF’s Rolando Tacuyan in the light heavyweight (81-kgs.)
In the women’s division, Baguio City’s Maricris Igam won over Cagayan de Oro City’s Beverly Casero in the elite women’s flyweight (45-kgs), and Josie Gabuco stopped CDO’s Jeanvee Flores in the third round of their flyweight (51-kgs).
Irish Magno of Leyte Sports Academy scored a 3-0 win over CDO’s Margie Waga in the bantamweight (54-kgs) finals, and Negros Occidental’s Risa Pasuit nipped CDO’s Kimberly Labajo in the lightweight (60-kgs).
