THE provincial veterinary office in Bontoc, Mountain Province has warned raisers of the dreaded porcine respiratory reproductive syndrome (PRRS) urging them to take preventive measures to safeguard their hogs. Veterinary Officer Rodel Bagawi said reports from hog raisers in the towns of Bauko and Bontoc said several pigs were getting afflicted by PRRS. The PRRS-infected pigs manifest lack of appetite, fever, difficulty in breathing, redness of skin, abortion or premature delivery in pregnant pigs and sudden death in severe cases. Butchering or selling infected pigs will spread the suspected disease that these should be burned or buried.
