Vice Mayor Duterte leaves father’s party

DAVAO CITY: Vice Mayor Paolo Duterte on Wednesday resigned from Hugpong sa Tawong Lungsod, a local political party formed by his father Mayor Rodrigo Duterte in 1992.

“Although it is a great honor and privilege to be a member of the Hugpong sa Tawong Lungsod Party, I am compelled to offer my resignation as a member, effective immediately. I wish I could do otherwise but recent events have persuaded me to carefully examine the direction my political career is taking,” Paolo said in his resignation letter addressed to City Administrator Melchor Quitain, the party’s secretary.

“The current leadership [Mayor Duterte] of Hugpong does not seem to recognize nor see the effort and determination that I have invested in the service of the Hugpong, thus I feel that the current leadership is intentionally turning a blind eye to my contribution to the cause,” he added.

The resignation of the younger Duterte, who is serving his first term as vice mayor, came after the elder Duterte endorsed his daughter, former mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio, to run for mayor in 2016.

Mayor Duterte, it was reported, preferred his daughter over his eldest son citing the latter’s political experience after serving vice mayor for one term before she became mayor for one term.

On Monday night, the mayor reiterated he is not running for president and if Sara would not seek the mayorship he would run for mayor instead.

Paolo said it is time to change the direction of his political career but assured “I will not be changing my thrust and mission which is to be of service to the City and its citizens.”
